Prevalence
In a recent study, the CDC found, the prevalence of Down Syndrome to be about 8 people per 10,000 in the United States. This is an increase of 456% since 1960. However, it is difficult to get an actual estimate because the life expectancy of a person with Down Syndrome is so much shorter than that of the average person. Males are more likely to have Down Syndrome than females. In addition, women aged 35 and older have a more likely chance for giving birth to a child with Down Syndrome than a younger woman does. http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/features/key-findings-down-syndrome-prevalence.html |
Causes and Treatment
Down Syndrome is caused by a defect on the 21st chromosome of a person. The defect is usually an extra copy of the chromosome. http://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/down/conditioninfo/pages/causes.aspx There is no treatment specifically for Down Syndrome. However, each case can be different. A person with Down Syndrome should have the proper care and stimulation to make the most of their development. People who work with children who have Down Syndrome should understand the specific intellectual and physical needs of each child. Many types of therapies are used in early intervention and throughout a person’s life. These include, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and emotional and behavioral therapies. https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/down/conditioninfo/Pages/treatments.aspx |
